NO JESUS CHRIST WAS NOT PREDICTED IN PSALMS

Christians claim that God can see what is going to happen in the future. He is a celestial fortune-teller. They also claim that in order that we might be able to show that Jesus was his Messiah, Prophet and Son that he foretold things about him in the Old Testament.

Luke 24:44 – Jesus said, “Everything which is written concerning Me… in the Psalms must be fulfilled.”

We are going to run through the alleged prophecies about Jesus in the Psalms to see if he was right.

 * Psalm 2:7. “You are My Son; this day I have begotten You.”

Alleged Fulfilment. Jesus’ claim to be the Son of God. The Church says there are three equal persons in God and that the Son, Jesus, proceeds from the Father and is begotten by God in that sense. Others say it refers to the virginal conception, Jesus being begotten by God.
 
It certainly means a Son of God who is unique in same way. The King of Israel was regarded as a special Son of God.

New Testament Interpretation: Acts 13:33 and Hebrews 1:5 say it speaks of Jesus.

The Truth. Jesus was a false prophet so he was not the Son of God. The prophecy could be about anybody. A man who behaves badly could still claim to be the Son of God if he says he acts this way for a good that only he can see.
 
If Jesus was perhaps begotten by God in the sense that God the Son comes from God the Father or perhaps being begotten by God refers to Jesus being begotten by God in the virginal conception which one is meant by the psalm? If either inference is true then it does not mean literal begetting, planting the seed that makes one a Father. And if it is not literal then perhaps begotten stands for a particularly intimate adoption that makes both God and son uniquely close.

* Psalm 8:4,5. Refers to the son of man.

Alleged Fulfilment. Jesus was a man and the son of man.

New Testament Interpretation. About Jesus according to Hebrews 2:6-9.

The Truth. The Psalm doesn’t claim to be a prediction. It is about man in general.

 * Psalm 132:11. The Messiah will be David’s descendant.

Alleged Fulfilment. David was Jesus the Messiah’s ancestor.

The Truth. There were many centuries between Jesus and David with many great calamities for the people in between. With the trustworthy genealogical records gone nobody could prove that anybody was of David’s line and the legitimate heir to the throne. When a prophecy predicts something that cannot be seen to have been fulfilled that shows that is a failure. God would not tell you that somebody will leave you flowers tomorrow if it will turn out that somebody will steal them before any evidence is left that they were ever left for you.

* Psalm 72. Kings will worship the Christ.

Alleged Fulfilment. The wise men coming to the baby Jesus with gifts of gold and frankincense and myrrh.

The Truth. The gospel never says that the wise men were kings but magicians. Given the Jewish and Christian opposition to magic, kings, was the last thing they could have been considered to be. The gospel says they sneaked out of the land to avoid King Herod. It would have been harder for kings with all the protection they need to have escaped from the land without Herod learning of it.

* Psalm 78:2. The author says that he will speak in parables.

Alleged Fulfilment. Jesus spoke in parables.

New Testament Interpretation. According to Matthew 13:35 Jesus spoke in parables to fulfil this.

The Truth. The author may have been writing about himself. All teachers use parables. The person who imagines that God would make such a senseless prediction needs to consult a psychiatrist.

* Psalm 69:9. “Zeal for Your house has eaten me up”.

Alleged Fulfilment. When Jesus put the buyers and sellers out of the Temple.

New Testament Interpretation. None given. John 2:17 simply says that the disciples were reminded of these lines when Jesus did this not that they regarded it as a prophecy.

The Truth. The verse does not state that the zealous person will cast crooks out of the Temple. The Psalm does not claim to be messianic. The composer may be speaking about himself. When he could be he is for he would not be that vague.

* Psalm 110:1. The Messiah is King David’s Lord and will sit on the right hand of God, that is, he will be the man who is next to God.

Alleged Fulfilment. Jesus claimed to be this person.

New Testament Interpretation. The synoptic gospels declare this.

The Truth. Jesus preached the necessity to keep praying though he said that one sincere prayer for every divine blessing was enough. He was a hypocrite so he was not God’s right hand man.

The prophecy is alleged to be about Jesus’ ascension. But if Jesus went to God the ordinary way it would still be fulfilled. And he could have been on his right side even while living on earth.

The prophecy gives no evidence for Jesus so what did God make it for? The answer is that the prophecy is not a prophecy at all. The prophecy is speaking of any king of Israel for all kings were considered to be Messiahs or anointed ones.

* Psalm 110:3. God says he begot the Messiah before the daystar (the sun), like the day.

Alleged Fulfilment. Jesus existing before the creation. His being an uncreated being.

New Testament Interpretation. None.

The Truth. God could still be speaking of a created being. From his perspective all things that have happened and will happen are present to him in the timelessness of eternity so he is becoming the Father of this being before time began. God can make timeless beings. Timelessness is simply a present that never came from a past and which will never give way to the future.

 * Psalm 110:4. The Messiah will be a priest according to the order of Melchizedek.

Alleged Fulfilment. Jesus offering himself as a sacrifice to his Father. He was not a priest ordained by men but a priest ordained by God like Melchizidek was.

New Testament Interpretation. Hebrews alone teaches this understanding.

The Truth. Anyone could say that God made them a priest. The psalm does not even claim to be a prediction.

* Psalm 118:22. The stone will be rejected and will be made the cornerstone by the power of God.

Alleged Fulfilment. Jesus was rejected by his people and became supreme after.

New Testament Interpretation. The same (Luke 20:17).

The Truth. There is no need for the Christian understanding. A lot of people could be said to have been rejected and become cornerstones. Also the gospels say that Jesus was accepted before he died and he lost that acceptance and then he got it back. He had a small following among the Jews though many fans. Not many wanted to obey him and serve him. But after he died he became the cornerstone for many Gentiles. But this brings up the question, is Christianity really Christianity? Paul was the main convert maker among the Gentiles and was certainly a fanatical fundamentalist character and dangerous.

* Psalm 2:1,2. Somebody will be rejected by the rulers and will be plotted against in vain.

Alleged Fulfilment. Everybody being against Jesus.

New Testament Interpretation. None.

The Truth. It could be applicable to any king or prince or officer of Israel.

* Psalm 59:4. “They run and prepare themselves though there is no fault in me; rouse Yourself [O Lord] to meet and help me, and see!”

Alleged Fulfilment. The Jews hating Jesus for nothing.

New Testament Interpretation. None.

The Truth. It is terrible that David could not write that he had enemies he did not deserve without it being turned into a prophecy in the Christian imagination.

* Psalm 41:9.  “Even my own familiar friend, in whom I trusted who ate of my bread, has lifted up his heel against me.” See also, Psalm 55:12-14.

Alleged Fulfilment. Judas betraying Jesus.

New Testament Interpretation. John 13 alone gives this interpretation and attributes it to Jesus.

The Truth. Who hasn’t had friends turned enemies? The next verse begs God to let him get his own back on his enemies though Jesus prayed, “Father, forgive them because they don’t know what they are doing” (Luke 23:34). The psalm does not claim to be messianic. The author may be writing about his own problem.

* Psalm 35:11. Malicious witnesses speak against me and accuse me of things don’t know of.

Alleged Fulfilment: Jesus was falsely accused during his trial.

New Testament Interpretation. None.

The Truth. Some prophecy that when it doesn’t even say if it is a court trial it means.

 * Psalm 38:14. “I have become like a man who hears not, in whose mouth are no arguments or replies”.
  
Alleged Fulfilment. Jesus not arguing his way out of the crucifixion.

The Truth. Why would Jesus have argued when his doom was sealed? It took no miracle for him to fulfil that prophecy. But Jesus did argue provocatively and was insulting. The prophecy would best describe a man of peace who didn't speak up for himself not the likes of Jesus who did speak up but only to make things worse. Jesus' reported behaviour during his trial marks Jesus out as immoral. This would show that the prophecy was not about him for he was nothing special.

Jesus always said that he was good and innocent and even said that God would save him from the cross by sending an army of angels if he wanted him to when he was arrested. Either the prophecy is not a prophecy at all or Jesus was a fake.
 
The psalm is about a sick man who is suffering from a plague and a man who confessed that he was overburdened by his own sins not about Jesus who allegedly said he never sinned and who was not a plague victim.

A verse about being quiet is hardly useful as a prophecy about Christ! Can’t Christians do better than that?

 * Psalm 16:10. “You will not abandon me to Sheol (the place of the dead), neither will You suffer Your holy one [Holy One] to see corruption.”

Alleged Fulfilment. The resurrection of Jesus from the dead.

New Testament Interpretation. Peter dishonestly said that God intended this meaning (Acts 2).

The Truth.

It does not say it is about the Messiah.  It is presented as David's work,

Read the Psalm and see that it never actually says that somebody will rise from the dead. It could be talking about recovery from grave illness that took the person to the brink of death.  Peter told the lie that David's tomb still had his body in it but nobody even knew anything about his remains then.  So by a process of elimination he worked out it meant Jesus not David.  That was trickery.

* Psalm 68:18. “You have ascended on high”.

Alleged Fulfilment. Jesus going up to Heaven.

New Testament Interpretation. Ephesians 4:8 says it speaks of this.

The Truth. An ascension of the spirit could fulfil this. It doesn’t say that it means an ascension of the body or one into Heaven. The text is speaking of the ascension of the ark, the golden chest that God’s presence rested on, up Mount Zion, the hill on which the Temple was built not Jesus.

Ephesians claims that since Jesus ascended into Heaven he must have descended into Hell. This logic proves that its author was twisted for it is laughable. It shows that the author never thought of Jesus ascending to Heaven from earth proving that the early Church never heard of anything like what is in the gospels. How? That would show that all the prophecy in the word would be no good for a story that is a heap of make-believe.

Conclusion
 
Jesus’ central credential, the prophecies that spoke of him, proves that he was not the Son of God or the Messiah. And that is because the credential is based on bizarre and strained understandings of the prophecies and in fact many of the prophecies are not prophecies at all. For example, the psalms don't even claim to be predictions and yet it is important to Christians to imagine that the future tale of Jesus is all over them. No prediction - no fulfilment. Only lies. Period.
