IS MORALITY REALLY RELATED TO THE DUTY TO LOVE UNCONDITIONALLY?

Morality is about love and justice ought to be done. It is really these two things.

Some say that morality is an evil dressed up as good.  It would then be a subtle evil.  Sometimes it is blatantly evil.

It must be admitted that it sometimes is!

Morality is about moral oughts - what ought to be done and that implies that there are things that ought not to be done.

A lot of nonsense has been grafted on to the word should. It is read very moralistically. Morality is about how you should use your free will. If free will is nonsense then morality is untrue. Its definition is wrong. This does not mean that we have to hurt each other if we want to. It is not that simple. Paradoxically, morality would have to teach: "Preach free will moralistically to those who relate to or believe in free will but otherwise do not preach that way to those who do not believe in it." Morality itself shows morality does not matter as much as we want to believe. Those who equate morality with God are just controlling bigots.

We would say that if there is no morality or free will then we should be forced by nature and it is a pity that we are not to do only things that are happiness-promoting for ourselves and others.

To say you should be forced by anything even blind forces to act in a particular way is to say that should is not about morality in the free will and responsibility sense but about people.

Liberty is seen as a great part of morality.

It is a fact that if you have medicine that can help a sick baby that you just find somewhere that you should be forced to help the baby. So liberty is not that important after all!

Whether you use reason or authority or God to decide if helping the baby is good, you are trying to sense the goodness. It is more about the sensing than anything else. There is no point in an all-knowing God telling you it is wrong to neglect the baby if you don’t sense it is wrong whether he tells you or not.

Morality is often parasitic on helping people but is not really about helping people but about honouring some authority such as God or man or religion. Because of the link with helping it is easy to be fooled.  If you want people to be sick so you can help them then this is about selfishly looking for to be morally virtuous!  For all we know, all religious people could be like that!

A law is a decree that you must do something whether you want to or not and no matter how much you don’t want to do it. If you do not obey, you will be punished and suffer. A law without a threat is not a law at all.

If you do good because you can and you want to, you are not doing it because some moral law of right and wrong tells you to.

If you do good because of this law you are less of a person. So we want you to be motivated to do good not to be moral. If the good is done to be good and just happens to be moral then that is fine.

Good and evil are not the same as morality. Evil is not the same as immorality. If there is no divine or human moral system, it will not stop you doing good and helping another. See the difference?

The notion of a moral law and a God to enforce it is not healthy and does harm in the long-term.

Do good because you want to and for no other reason. Do not do it even partly for any other reason.

Drop moralistic thinking such as, “I have to do x”. You do not have to. Such thinking will boost anger and resentment and make you feel enslaved. And your example is not good for others either. It seems to work for a while but the long term damage will be grave.

Suppose you can help a baby. You might help. You might not. You might even hurt the baby. Pain always cries out for a solution. It is intrinsically saying, “Get rid of me or deal with me. Perhaps I will try and force you to help” Some say that if there is no moral law then why help? They would say it does not matter what you do or don’t do. We have shown that to be wrong.

Bottom line: moral shoulds are not as important as deciding you want others to be happy and doing what you should to make it happen. This is should as in what you should do for a goal not should as in morality.  Morality is linked to unconditional love but it in fact threatens such love.
